Featured Volunteers: DiAnn and Terry Rooney![]() Terry Rooney with our founder, Donja Garvey, handing over more laptops for MMV students.
As soon as Terry Rooney heard about how our students and families struggled with the simplest tasks because they lacked a laptop or computer, he immediately offered to find resources to change that situation. As a retired executive from HP and currently a technology consultant, he decided he could do what he enjoyed while spreading some good in his community. He was well aware of the need through the philanthropic work of his wife, DiAnn, who had been helping My Mother's Voice through her charitable activities as well. Both of them put out the word that they wanted serviceable laptops donated that Terry could refurbish with an updated operating system and add a wireless mouse. Since then, dozens of our students and families have had their lives improved with the donation of free laptops. Many of our parents can now learn English at home and help their children with assignments for the first time. This has been life-changing for so many, and Terry continues this amazing work every time another laptop comes his way.. We are very grateful for these wonderful gifts that so many of us take for granted. Being able to use a computer at home, is a life skill that will only grow in importance for our young families. Thank you, Terry! If you have a laptop or computer that you have recently shelved for an upgraded model, we'd love your donation! Contact us through our Meta Messenger or email us at info@mymothersvoice.org for details. We can accept donations of technology that is not too outdated, usually 2-3 years old. Thank you! Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities:Fund raising for pets program: Funding needed for family pets that need veterinary treatment and families are unable to afford the costs. Pre-screened vets participate in volunteering their time for this worthy program.
Reading Rovers: Funding needed for therapy-trained dogs for school visits. Often a child struggling with reading issues will have reduced anxiety and fear of making a mistake reading aloud if they read to a therapy dog. Reading Rovers visit our schools where we have our literacy programs to help children who would not want to read aloud but will open up when reading to the ever-patient, nonjudgmental dog who loves to listen! Collaboration is from trainers and rescue organizations. Special Projects: Keep checking back for notices of special projects like a Pajama Drive in the summer when we collect new PJ's for kindergartners and first graders. Or when we fundraise to take students to a local college campus for an initial visit to instill the confidence that they can be the first generation to go to college -- and graduate! Special events: Be creative and support a program with special event that you organize! We will help with the publicity through our media channels and on the website. Contact us with your idea! |
